Beau’s Lameness
Posted: November 9, 2010 Filed under: MawdsLeigh Equus Leave a comment »I have been reading with much interest your section in respect of MawdsLeigh Equus. My Daughter has owned Beau, a Connemara Thoroughbred Cross, since the beginning of the year (previously loaned him for 1 year). He is 10 years old and up until last August she has very much enjoyed competing/eventing on him in Cross Country, Hunter Trials and Show Jumping. Back in April this year, Beau developed a hoof infection (Right Front) which was poultered. Since this infection he has and is, continuing to show signs of lameness with treatment of infusions being administered to the navicular bursa. Beau has also been re-shod with raised heels due to the vet advising of a high degree of hoof imbalance. The time span of this has now been over many months with Periods of “Box Rest”, and periods of my daughter able to ride “in walk”.
I am eagerly attempting to question my own self awareness in respect of this story – the frustration, the disappointment, that I have felt for my daughter I accept, is my own frustration and disappointment. I now find myself personally exhausted by all the “external” information surrounding Beaus lameness and feel the way forward is to question the “internal”, especially the mirroring that is going on in terms of Beau, my daughter and myself! Could this be a total imbalance with my daughter? myself? or all of us?
I would welcome any comments, advice or guidance you may have that will enable me to unravel any highlighted truths, which, in turn may help each of us in our own personal journeys!
Thank you

Hi Fiona
You are a very courageous and wise lady to know that whatever is happening externally that is affecting you is an opportunity to look inward and start or continue the healing process.
Beau’s lameness is two things: first he is reflecting aspects of your own inner thought system. Second he is letting you know that he is not being treated correctly and that he is not having an enjoyable experience and that the situation is inappropriate. An insight into the internal world is that the right side represents the (masculine) career, finance (father) the feet are about moving forward and the infection (lack of joy flowing through you). There is also relationship issues horse/rider (daughter) because of the injections Beau requires.
Without working with you to resolve your inner conflict at a deeper level, you have the opportunity here to look at where you have lack of joy in both your career, financial situation and relationships, your daughter will have the same patterns as you and as for the horse Beau he is a gift to open you up to another way of looking at things. Beau is also letting you know that there is a bonding (communication) issue with your daughter (as he needs shots into his bones to reduce friction). This will also reflect the relationship between you and your daughter (friction/lack of joy).
This is only an insight however without working with someone who knows what they are doing the pattern will keep on repeating itself in various forms. On a positive note whenever you have addressed and/or moved through your own dilemmas with clarity only three things can happen: the horse makes a full recovery or a new horse is effortlessly presented to you and you will have complete understanding and awareness of the inner thought system (why things happen, where they stem from and how to resolve situations). As for your daughter she has to want to work with this and sometimes it can take many painful situations before they are ready to become aware. What a pain I had to endure before awakening however what a revelation it was for me to know that there are solutions for everything. WOW!!

I was with my daughter and our 2 gorgeous dogs. I am both working in and studying the horse world. The horses are awesome. The riders a very different story, they try to control the horse it looks a very painful place to be. One of my biggest breakthroughs in natural horsemanship is that the horse can only respond to what is being communicated to it. It can pick up every tension every fear.
I was recently on a 10 yr old Mare Ster Freshian she was absolutely from another world, she was a dressage horse, I gave her a signal that I was unaware of and WOW she was off in her conditioned state what a lesson I learned that day, I learned how I took my focus away for a split second the result total chaos, what I found most fascinating that after jumping off and nearly killing myself, the owner could not believe that I instantly knew it was 100% me and that it had nothing to do with horse, in all her years in the Equestrian world no one had ever taken ownership of this, how could it possible be the horse they are one of the most intelligent animals on earth.
You can access a wealth of information from them way beyond any personal experience especially when you are aware. I love watching playing and riding horses they are more fascinating and interesting than any human and they want nothing from you except integrity and clear communication. Most of my life I had a mind that I had trained in a very limited capacity, I had no awareness. In the world of the equus something indescribable shifts inside me the minute I am near one of these most powerful of beings the horse I somehow can access my most innovative states of mind whenever I am around them. WOW!!!

Recently my confidence has plummeted as my horse reared, although I stayed on I constantly fear this will happen again even at the littlest things I tense up. How can I learn to trust the horse I am sitting on and become a more positive and confident rider?

A: Life is very difficult if you are unaware, begin to observe what you are getting caught up in start watching the mind before you even get on your horse. Instead of trying to avoid uncertainty and manipulate life take an innocent attitude. Self confidence is the freedom to know fear and embrace it; allow yourself the freedom to learn lessons, experience failure and success – they are two sides of the same coin, you need them both. When your horse reared how amazing is it that you stayed on, WoW that is courage and courage is to move on dangerous paths. Life is dangerous and only cowards can avoid danger but hey they are already dead. A person who is really alive will always move into the unknown, they live in the insecurity they take risks and relish the challenge.
The mind always calculates – it is cunning. To look at things from a different perspective the horse always reflects what is going on inside of us, for example if you are tense the horse is tense. The horse picks up your emotions and fear then acts accordingly. Become aware of your mirror. The only way to trust the horse is to trust yourself, that you are able to deal with any situations on your horse, this is confidence and whatever the outcome learn the lesson.

I believe horses are Masters in teaching Self-Awareness and are the most awesome, beautiful creatures who can ultimately mirror the truth of what is happening within you. They not only reflect incongruities in emotion and intention, they highlight unrecognised strengths and improvements in people aswell.
I would appreciate any horse behaviour topics or problems, just email info@mawdsleigh.com Look forward to our journey with Equus.
